Network Virtual field trip essentials & hardware connections
Types of Networks
Keeping our analogy to the switchboards and intercoms operators used years ago.
· PAN – Personal Area Network – Wireless Range approx. 10 meters – This would be equivalent to an intercom between secretary and supervisor. “Rosemarie, which button do I press?” “The record button, President Nixon, sir.”
· LAN – Local Area Network – Wireless Range approx. 300 meters – Think inter-office connections on the same floor. Our operator does not need an outside line.
· MAN – Metropolitan Area Network – Think city, university campus, or multi-layered business (skyscraper). We would need a pool of operators back in the day.
· WAN – Wide Area Network – Needs an outside line (Internet) to connect LANS to one another.
· VPN – Virtual Private Network – The operator uses a different phone (the red phone in the movies), or a scrambling device to insure security. Government, large corporations and the military uses VPN to transmit secure information.
